FUTURES MEAL + PERFORMANCE + DIALOGUE 180min (2018)
LEAD ARTIST

with Diego Galafassi (performance), Josefin Vargö (food artist), Tiina Lehtimäki (performance), Simon Deschamps (performance), David Tàbara (dialogue)

The last piece of a trilogy closing Diego’s 3 years artistic residence with EU-IMPRESSIONS PROJECT,

IPCC Climate future scenarios were translated into 4 menus and served to a group of policy makers, scientists, and civil society.
After dinner, participants were taken through a digestion process in form of a dance performance and a dialogue.

Digestion, which in Portuguese can be split into di-gestão - meaning roughly un-management. This participatory performance explores ways in which artists and scientists can collaborate to generate environments rich in sensorial imagination to support visioning and climate transformations.

First performed in Tiszafüred, Hungary (April 2018).

The art-science process

Diego Galafassi and David Tàbara in close collaboration with climate scientists and researchers from the EU-project IMPRESSIONS developed an art-science process to engage participants in a sensorial and imaginative exploration of climate futures. The participatory performance took place in Hungary where policy makers, practitioners and scientists from across Europe and Asia were gathered to the final workshop of the EU-project IMPRESSIONS.

Digestion means "the process of treating a substance with heat, enzymes, or a solvent to promote decomposition or extract essential components". This process of break-down, synthesis and transformations is akin to what we face in engaging with the work of developing novel trajectories towards sustainability. The three components of the process were a meal, a performance and a dialogue.

The meal

We translated four shared socio-economic pathways under climate change (O'Neill et al. 2015) into 4 different menus. Guests chose their table and were served food from different futures.

Experience design: Josefin Vargö and Diego Galafassi

The performance

Following the meal, participants were invited to enter the digestive process themselves, and meet the immense diversity of beings and movements that support that process of transformations.

Performance by Tiina Lehtimäki and Simon Deschamps
Directed by Diego Galafassi
