Poverty Alleviation and Ecosystems Change

SUSTAINABLE POVERTY ALLEVIATION FROM COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS

Interactive story produced by Diego Galafassi

spaces project

I was privileged of taking part of SPACES project as part of the facilitation team for a series of participatory workshops in Kenya and Mozambique. The processes were designed to develop understanding between the complex relations between ecosystems change and human well-being in coastal communities.

During those workshops I filmed interviews and daily life on the coastal sites. The interactive story above is a pilot for a short film under production.

SPACES was a large collaborative initiative funded by the UK Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) program with some support from SwedBio. The project has (1) uncovered scientific knowledge on the complex relationship between ecosystem services, poverty, and human wellbeing, (2) built capacity among researchers at all levels, (3) developed and applied novel methodologies and processes, and (4) engaged with tens of stakeholders in both countries.
